About me

I spent eleven years building networks before I built my first website.

That probably explains best how I work: I come from the technical side and learned along the way to translate it. Which is why you get answers from me, not jargon.

Irena Kühn

Hello

I am Irena Kühn.

The website is there, the shop is running – and still no enquiries? That is exactly where my work begins.

I help self-employed people, small businesses and online retailers get found and sell. Not with a standard solution off the shelf, but with whatever is actually missing in your case – and that is surprisingly often something other than you suspect on the first call.

I started somewhere else: with routers, phone systems and servers, in Croatia and later in Graz. For eleven years I was the one you call when nothing works any more. That shapes how I approach a website today – I want to know what is broken before I sell you something new.

How you can tell we are a good fit

You want honest assessments instead of ranking guarantees. Steps you can follow instead of an agency black box. And someone who also says what is not necessary.

I mean that last point seriously: a good share of my first conversations end with me advising against something. That is not a sales trick – it is the reason people come back.

The way here

From routers to websites

Read from top to bottom. The first eleven years are not here for completeness – they are the reason almost nothing about your website surprises me.

  1. 2005–2009

Studied computer science Zagreb University of Applied Sciences

    Zagreb, Croatia

Bachelor in Computer Science. Back then that mostly meant networks, operating systems and databases.

  2. 2009–2011

    Network administrator Callidus Grupa d.o.o.

    Krapina, Croatia

Setting up and repairing networks, configuring MikroTik routers, installing phone systems, chasing VoIP faults. Plus training for clients who wanted nothing to do with any of it.

What that means for you I spent ten years explaining technology to people who were not interested in it. That is a skill you do not unlearn.

  3. 2011–2013

    Systems administrator FINA

    Zagreb, Croatia

Monitoring Windows, Unix and Linux servers for a state financial agency. Reporting, incident handling, service desk.

What that means for you That is why I set up measurement on every website first and only switch things on afterwards. Without numbers you work in the dark – I did not learn that in marketing but in a data centre.

  4. 2013–2018

    B2B enterprise advisor UPC Austria

    Graz

Five and a half years as the technical contact for business customers: VPN, routing, phone systems, backbone. Second-line support and escalation point – the person who got what nobody else could solve.

What that means for you If your site is suddenly unreachable or emails stop arriving, that is not an exceptional state for me. It is the kind of problem I started my day with for five years.

  5. 2015–2017

IT & Mobile Security FH JOANNEUM

Graz · alongside the job, not completed

Two years next to a full-time job – I did not finish it. What I took away was plenty: how attacks actually work, and at which handful of points websites keep coming apart.

What that means for you That is why security is early on my list and not at the end. And it is why this unfinished degree is here at all: I use what I learned from it every week – I just do not have a certificate for it.

  6. 2018–2019

    B2B enterprise advisor T-Mobile Austria

    Austria

Same role, different corporation. And the growing sense that I would rather solve whole problems than sections of them.

  7. since 2018 · ongoing

Master in Business and Computer Science Ferdinand Porsche FernFH

    alongside the job

Business and Computer Science, next to two companies. Not finished yet – studying alongside work takes exactly as long as it takes, and I am not writing down a degree I do not have yet.

What that means for you I can talk numbers with your accountant and DNS records with your host. That both belong together is the reason I put myself through this on top of everything else.

  8. 2019–2020

Product manager Triotronik Computer und Netzwerktechnik

    Weiz, Styria

The move from “repairing” to “deciding what gets built”. Short, but instructive – and the last post as an employee.

  9. since October 2020

    Owner idigIT e.U.

    Graz

Websites, search engines and advertising for the self-employed and small businesses. No standard solution, no ready-made template – and no ranking guarantees that nobody can keep anyway.

What that means for you You talk to the same person who builds it. Whatever I promise you, I have to deliver myself afterwards – that disciplines more than any contract.

  10. since September 2022

Co-founder and managing director SHOMUGO GmbH

    Graz

Together with my husband Ronny: the e-commerce agency for retailers who are successful – and for those who want to be. Building shops, shop audits, targeted fixes and ongoing care wherever revenue is being lost in the sales process.

What that means for you If your project is a shop, there is not just me behind it but a second company with its own team. That I have a stake in it, I tell you at the start and not on the invoice.

Degrees and certificates

One is finished, one is ongoing, one I did not complete. All three say which applies – as do the certificates, most of which have expired.

And the honest footnote to it

Most of these certificates have expired. The MikroTik and Ubiquiti exams belong to a job I no longer do – I do not sell networks any more and therefore do not resit them. They are here because they explain where my technical understanding comes from, not because I am advertising with them.

With the Google certificates there is more to it: those are free online tests that expire yearly and can be repeated in an hour. They say little about ability. What says more are the campaigns where I paid for the lesson – and there is a more honest account of that on the page about advertising campaigns.

The two SISTRIX entries are not exams but professional training – and the only lines here that have anything to do with what people book me for today. The upper one is from the current year. I say so because a list consisting mostly of expired items would otherwise hide exactly that.

And then there is this

  • Guinness Crafted the perfect pint · 2015
  • Grill & Co Campus Steak Master Class

Neither has anything to do with websites. It is here because there is more to a person than their invoices – and because a properly poured Guinness is made of patience and the right order of things. Like almost everything here.

Three languages

Which language would you like to work in?

Not as a line on a CV, but practically: project conversations, copy and correspondence all work in each of the three.

  • Deutsch

My everyday language since 2013. Contracts, legal texts and official paperwork included.

  • English

From thirteen years in IT – where every piece of documentation and every error message is in English anyway.

  • Hrvatski

Mother tongue. My studies and first working years were in Croatia – professionally, not just in conversation.

Why that is more than a line on a CV

Part of my work runs across borders – a shop in Croatian, a company with a service area in Germany, a business in Slovenia. It is rarely just about translating: a website in another language needs its own search terms, its own legal texts and often its own address. That is work you have to know before you offer it.

And if you have nothing to commission

Write to me anyway.

I am always looking for people who want to change something – in the literal sense – and who are open to other points of view. Two companies and a few projects nobody had planned have come out of conversations like that.

LinkedIn is also where things end up that would not warrant a post of their own here: observations from projects, mistakes I have noticed, occasionally a recommendation. It is the fastest way to reach me if you would rather write a message than fill in a form.

Irena on LinkedIn

The simplest thing is to talk to me briefly.

Half an hour, free, no sales pitch. Write me two sentences about what is not running smoothly – I will tell you what I would do in your position. Including when the answer is that you do not need anyone for it.
